Spector's ex-lover can testify in murder case The ex-lover of US music producer Phil Spector, accused of murdering B-movie actress Lana Clarkson at his home in California, will be allowed to testify that he threatened her twice with a gun, a judge ruled yesterday (April 10). Devra Robitaille, a former employee and lover of Spector, told investigators that Spector threatened to shoot her when she tried to leave his house, once in the 1970s and once in the 1980s. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fiddler granted a motion by prosecutors to allow her to testify, saying such evidence could show "lack of accident or mistake" in Spector's actions on the night of Clarkson's death. Defence lawyers' arguments that events occurring 20 or 30 years ago have little relevance to the case were unsuccessful. Clarkson died from a single shot to the head at the producer's Los Angeles mansion in February 2003. Spector has previously denied murder, claiming that the gunshot wound was "self-inflicted". The case is set to go to trial on Monday (April 16), beginning with jury selection. Opening statements are not expected to be made before the end of the month. |
